Cottage Grove High School Lions Football Announces Transition to OSAA 3A Classification for 2024 Season

COTTAGE GROVE, OREGON – 2/2/24

Cottage Grove High School Lions Football is embarking on a new chapter as they announce their decision to transition from the Oregon School Activities Association 4A classification to the 3A classification for the upcoming 2024 football season. This move comes after CGHS met the established criteria set forth by the OSAA for football teams considering a move down a classification in football.

While the decision was not made lightly, the leadership and football coaching staff at Cottage Grove High School believes it is in the best interest of their student-athletes. The CGHS Lions have a storied tradition of success and victories at the 4A level, and this shift to the 3A classification is seen as a strategic move to foster the continued development and growth of their football program.

CGHS will compete in Special District 3 this season and recognizes the challenges and competitive nature of the league. They will now compete against Creswell, Elmira, Harrisburg, La Pine, Madras, Pleasant Hill, and Sisters. In addition they have scheduled non-league contests with South Umpqua and Coquille.

"It's a strategic decision for our student-athletes, providing an opportunity to compete and find success on the football field while upholding our athletic department values of respect, integrity and excellence,” said Garrett Bridgens, Athletic Director, at Cottage Grove High School. "Our goal is to return to the 4A level as quickly as possible and stronger than ever, but for now, we're eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities in this new chapter."

This shift is exclusive to football; all other CGHS sports will maintain their 4A status.
